A website or “web site” is a collection of related web resources, such as web pages, videos, images and/or text content. Websites are traditionally built using HTML/CSS and consumed via web browsers such as Chrome, Safari or Microsoft Edge. Websites are typically identified with a domain name and published a web server.

The phonetic pronunciation was “Web site” (sometimes capitalised as “Web Site”). Since “Web” is a proper noun referring to the “World Wide Web”, this modification has become infrequently used, and the term “website” has evolved into the standard spelling.

Types Of Websites

Websites have many functions, e.g. personal websites/blogs, commercial websites, government/informational websites including and not limited to non-profit organisation websites and social media.

Domain Names

Every website is identified and accessed by a unique series of numbers called an IP address. This mechanism was deemed not to be user-friendly and augmented with domain name servers (DNS). A domain name describes the words used to identify a website when entering an address into a web browser. Also known as a URL or Universal Resource Locator, like an IP address, each URL is unique to each website.

Static Vs Interactive Websites

Websites can be broken down into two broad categories — static and interactive. Interactive websites form part of the Web 2.0+ collective and allow interactivity between the site owner and visitors or users of the site. Static sites serve or collect information but do not permit direct involvement with the viewer or users.
